Quit Smoking, Catch the Flu - My Week in Review

I started feeling bad on Friday afternoon. You know, felt a cold coming on, yucky throat, stuffy nose, etc. Ella was sent home from school about 2:30 on the same day because she felt bad. No fever, no nothing, just not feeling well. I was warned when I picked her up that a couple of the kids in her class had the flu. Pffft! We don't get the flu. I wasn't worried.

On Saturday and Sunday Ella seemed to feel OK. I began to feel steadily worse, and Adam wasn't looking so hot either (runny nose, coughing). So Adam and I stayed home from church on Sunday just to be sure. I got them so over the counter medication and planned for a super busy week at work. I also decided that I would quit smoking. Sitting on your porch coughing your brains out while puffing on a cigarette does not make you feel very intelligent. I've wanted to quit forever, and somehow manage to quit easily when I'm pregnant but just haven't been able to put them away since.

Anyway....

Monday morning I dropped Ella off at 7:30am. Her teacher called me to pick her up at 7:45am. She wasn't running fever, but she burst into tears when she walked into the classroom and said she didn't feel well. I hadn't even dropped Adam off yet, so I kept him too. Tuesday I tried to take everyone to school again (I know, I am a terrible mother, but I really had a lot of work to do, and I was sucking it up).

I was called to pick up Ella at 12:30pm on Tuesday. She was asleep on her desk when I arrived, and running fever. I took her to the doctor. Flu. She went with me to the doctor. Flu plus sinus infection. Awesome. Five hours later, we arrived at home. Ella and I spent Wednesday on couches, her watching cartoons, me attempting to get work done and finally just giving up.

On Wednesday, I downloaded a new application to my i-phone. It was an application called Health Coach and was Allen Carr's famous (apparently... who knew?) method to quit smoking. I did this because even though I had not smoked a cigarette since Sunday, I still really wanted one, and felt certain that I would cave in. I thought I would give it a try. I can't really explain it, but it worked. I absolutely do not want a cigarette and truly don't think I ever will again.

Anyway, Wednesday afternoon when Adam got home from school, I knew we were in trouble, as he was still runny, still coughing, and now he was HOT. I was still feeling pretty bad by Thursday morning, so John took off work to help me out. He took Adam to the doctor. Flu? Absolutely. Plus, he was positive for viral pneumonia. Adam spent the afternoon with me on the couch. I read a book. He took a 3 hour nap, on my chest.

So here it is Friday. John is home again helping with the kids. I am still feeling weak/tired, but substantially better, which means I have got to get some darn work done. Ella is pretty much recovered. Adam is still symptomatic, but ready to run around and play already.

Big week. Now, back to work.
